VFW Post 9788 in Horsham, Pa. is starting to thrive after almost being non-existent. "It was pretty bad,” said Tom Decker, post commander. "We were in bad shape but thanks to everyone jumping in we have been able to turn things around.

Decker said that there are many that dug in to help save the Horsham post and that it was a true team effort.

"I was involved with the post years ago and drifted away,” said Decker. "I saw that it was about to be shut down and decided to get involved again but I knew it would take a lot. I credit the younger guys getting involved. That is so important.”

Decker said it is not just veterans but the whole community that turned the tide. They started with a pancake breakfast fundraiser. Later they had dueling pianos and dueling banjos at other events.

"We have fun,” said Decker. "We also have blood drives and we do other community projects we have a local soccer team that we support as well.”

Decker said that it is everyone working together that saved the post. "It’s our past, our present and our future all coming together to make this work,” said Decker. "Our pavilion was built years ago and it matters now more than ever for us to be able to hold events outdoors,” said Decker. "With the COVID issues it has made us more survivable.”

The post was awarded the commanders cup by the district 16 leadership this past year in recognition of their successful recovery.
